With spring approaching, it’s time to get your closet ready for all the fabulous new fashions. So, what’s popping up all over the runways for this upcoming spring season, you ask? Well, one major hit is floral patterns. Flower print dresses, skirts and tops. What a perfect theme for spring, don’t you think?
Another popular pattern making waves is colorful graphic print dresses. These prints are mostly coming in smock style dresses. Now, I am going to go against what I usually say, but since this style is very busy, do not over accessorize. Keep it simple. Perhaps a belt and some stud earrings. If you are toting a purse, make sure it is a solid color. And the same goes with your shoes. Oh, and P.S: Wedge sandals look great with this style!

Cropped faux fur jackets are oh-so-swanky this season. (Faux fur is fake fur, so all of you animal lovers out there, have no fear!) They are perfect for every girl, whether you are the jeans and t-shirt type, or skirts and heels. I know a lot of you casual-type girls may shy away from this style, but trust me; it won’t give you that over-the-top tacky look some of those great big real fur coats can do. If you keep it a safe dark color, and short and fitted, it can look great! It dresses up any outfit yet doesn’t overdo it. And if you do like to dress up, it just adds to your look. Better get shopping!
A hat is the ultimate accessory for these cold winter months. What better way to look fashionable and stay warm? They add a little extra oomph to any outfit, and are the ultimate savior for bad hair days, or days when you just don’t have time to style your hair. Now ladies, I am not talking about your standard baseball caps. Those are fine for dressing down and in sporty situations. But there are so many other fun types out there. There are fedoras, knit caps, bucket hats, cowboy hats, butterfly hats, military caps. There are just so many different kinds, I could never name them all here. So there has to be one that works for you.
If you love to get dressed all girly and wear skirts, then do I have a trend for you! Short voluminous skirts are in this winter. These are high-waisted skirts that shoot out diagonally from your waistline. They can be pleated or flowy. There are a lot of fabrics to choose from in this style, but for the winter months I suggest wool. And of course a thick pair of stockings!
A great thing about winter fashion is all the fabulous knits! Sweaters, cardigans, skirts, sweaters; so much to choose from! They are comfy, warm and fashionable. I just picked up a thick, gray, knitted, turtleneck sweater that comes down to my thighs, and I can’t get enough of it. It is so comfortable, and with a pair of thick black stretch pants and black knee-high boots, it is simply to die for! And the best part about it: I am not freezing, which is quite common with my desire for high fashion and cold winter months. I can fit a form fitting long-sleeved shirt beneath it, and if it is really cold, a fitted sports tank top beneath that. And it still manages not to look over-bulky. I repeat, hooray for knits!
Colored gemstones are the hottest look in jewelry this season. Big, bright and flashy all the way. And there are so many cuts to chose from. My fav is square. I just picked up this bracelet that is filled with a whole bunch of different colored bright square stones. And this is one of the few occasions where the stones aren’t real precious gems. Of course, the setting is 24k-gold plated, but that’s because I am rich!
A new trend making waves is vests. They are often referred to as “menswear vests,” but there is nothing manly about them. I think they get that name because they have a similar appearance to the vests guys wear underneath their suits and tuxedos. Except way more girly. They can be used in both dressy and informal situations. And there are various types to choose from. The cinch vest accentuates your waist, and should be worn buttoned (it buttons up high at the waist). This type looks really great with dresses or on top of dress shirts. Another type is more wide and boxy, and should be worn open over casual comfy clothes. But either way, they are super stylish.
I was so excited to hear that wide-legged jeans are back in style! For all of you sick and tired of that skinny jean look, dig through your drawers and find those great wide-legged jeans you tucked a way a couple of seasons ago. Or if you never got into that trend, now is the time. The great thing about wide-legged jeans is that you can wear them with any type of shoe! Going out on a date? Throw on some heels. Hanging with the girls? Break out your sneakers. Boots of all styles work as well. Jeans can be the staple of any wardrobe, no matter what look you are going for. Can anyone say, versatile? I personally prefer stretchy denim, whether it is a skinny jean, wide-legged, boot cut, whatever. Stretchy denim is usually made with a type of lycra or spandex material thrown in the mix, and is form fitting without being restricting. So I can go for walks, go dancing, or just lounge around without feeling restricted or uncomfortable, and still look fabulous.
Having trouble figuring out how you are going to do your make-up for Halloween? I have some simple, easy-to-follow tips. If you are going to be a specific character, then just cut out or print out a pic of your character and enlarge it in the face area. You could use a color photocopy machine for this if you got your pic from a book, comic or magazine. If you are going to be something like a fairy or witch, go online and do an image search on your choice. I am sure a bunch of pics will pop up. Pick out your favorite one with a clear shot of the face and print it out.
So, it’s almost Halloween, and finding the perfect costume can be grueling. You can always go with the classics like vampires, witches, and black cats. Or dress up like your favorite movie or comic character. Halloween stores have plenty of ready-made character costumes all prepackaged; all you would need are some accessories. But honestly, it is more fun to create your own costume. This can work with whatever you choose to be. If you have a movie character that you just adore, print out a picture of her/him and go hit up the stores and see what you can find. Thrift stores come in really handy here – they are affordable and have so many hidden treasures when it comes to costumes. Just the other day, Midge was at a local thrift store and found this oh-so-funky, way-old wedding dress for really cheap. She was thinking of getting that, a black wig, throwing on some ghoulish make-up and being the Bride of Frankenstein. And then there are always the super cutesy girly costumes, like fairies, French maids, genies, and cowgirls. And that classic rule I always stress: accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. The little things can improve your costumes soooo much. They give it that authentic look. And most importantly, have fun! Halloween is a time to be daring, and a little kooky. It’s a time to be someone else for a day. Are you usually the tomboy type? Then glitz it up for Halloween and get dressed way fancy like a pop star diva. Are you usually a glam girl? Then dress all spooky like a zombie. You can look like yourself any other day. Don’t dress in a way that will make you feel uncomfortable of course; just try something different.
